It was a day when it was pouring and they could have had the deference for the people who were there and especially for the children, to have opened a quarter of an hour earlier and not have us out in the open until right on time. The schedule is important, but there are times when people should take precedence over the rules.

Neuschwanstein Castle is well worth a visit. A lot is done to preserve it. Everything is also well organized, as you can only enter with a guided tour and audio guide. It's not so crowded. We took the bus up and had to walk for about 15 minutes.

Such a beautiful location and castle! I wish there was more from the tour but it's totally worth it. If you are in shape I recommend hiking up and down to get a feel for the forest. You have to walk to the bridge and see the castle from the back. Unreal!

We got the tickets last minute when we found out that you can't get inside the castle without a guided tour. We are so glad we did!!! Our tour guide Stephen was exceptionally knowledgeable about the castle's history and had tons of fun facts and stories. In addition he was very friendly and gave us insider information about where to take pictures and how to best navigate the castle once inside. The carriage ride at the end was amazing as well.

The guided tour was great in itself, BUT when we bought the ticket it said "from Hohenschwangau" and we couldn't get closer than 700m as the crow flies from a viewpoint. We assumed that with a 3-hour tour and at the price, we would actually be allowed to visit both castles. We were basically held up for 2.5 hours with views until the actual guided tour of Neuschwanstein took place. Before that, we walked through everything again that we had already walked through the day before for free. Only with a guide who had lots of (really great) information about the castles and the royal family. If it says "from Hohenschwangau" in the description, I would at least have liked to have been on the grounds of the castle.....

I reserved the Neuschwanstein entrance with audio guide for three members of my family. It went well at the site. However, I needed to download pdf official tickets only thru headout app at the gate. Since I was not aware that the email was not effective as a ticket and that there is a need to download not only pdf file but also the headout app, I was a kind of nervous. Fortunately by using the neuschwanstein free wifi, I was able to download both and successfully showed the tickets to the gate official. Also when entering the tour, each member in my family needed to scan the QR code on the official ticket. In order for that, I asked other members to take photo of the each QR code by their smartphone and to scan the photo. Proposal: - explicitly mention in the email that official ticket is necessary for entrance in the castle - allow downloading pdf official ticket without headout app - allow sending each pdf file to other members Hopefully this may work for future guests. Thank you,

I paid for premium guided tour where the description says it will be for a small group of people but only to found out I'm in a big bus with others who paid half of what I paid. Well at least the double price I paid resulted in the guide reserving the front row seats for those who paid premium prices.

There was insufficient time to fully enjoy the castle due to the other stops. We could have easily have done without the trip to the town with the passion play & frankly it's unclear what the point was apart from an additional toilet stop. This limited the time we had for the main castle which was the reason we booked the tour.

The premium tour was definitely worth the price because the bus was way nicer, there was coffee, water, fruits, and snacks, the tour groups were smaller so we weren't crowded into the spaces as much as the bigger groups were. We got to the castles early so we were the first ones in line. I do recommend not booking on a sunday as the stores will be closed if you want souvenirs.

I can't tell you how pleased we were with this experience. Having been to Munich and the surrounding area several times, usually driving myself, this was a top notch tour. The bus was wonderful, cofortable and very roomy. We were provided with snacks and drinks during the trip and there was no concern about driving or being sure that we had the correct tickets for the times that we wanted to tour the various castles. I would strongly recommend taking this tour if your going to be in Munich and want to see castles and the countryside. We were treated like royalty and loved every minute of our adventure. Thank you to Headout and the staff for making this a memorable time for us.

Neuschwanstein Castle of Bavaria | King Ludwig II’s Swan Castle

Perched high in the Bavarian Alps, the Neuschwanstein Castle was envisioned as a personal retreat for the ‘Mad King’ Ludwig II. The palace’s towering spires and swan motifs reflect the king’s fascination with medieval chivalry and Wagnerian operas. The castle’s fairytale-like architecture has inspired many, including Walt Disney, who modeled Sleeping Beauty’s Castle after it. Though King Ludwig never saw the castle fully completed, Neuschwanstein lives on, drawing millions of visitors every year.

Why visit Neuschwanstein Castle?

Why visit Neuschwanstein Castle?
  • Historical significance: Nicknamed ‘Mad King Ludwig’ for his eccentricities and lavish spending, King Ludwig II of Bavaria was a great patron of the arts. He commissioned the castle as a retreat from royal duties and a homage to the operas of Richard Wagner.
  • Scenic surroundings: The Disney Castle of Munich is perched on a rugged hill in the foothills of the Alps, overlooking the village of Hohenschwangau and the surrounding mountains. On a clear day, you can see across the Bavarian countryside for miles.
  • Fairytale castle comes to life: Neuschwanstein is the epitome of a Romantic fairytale castle with its turrets, towers, and colorful frescoes. Walking through the castle grounds feels like stepping into a world of knights, princesses, and dragons.
  • Cultural icon: The Neuschwanstein Castle has been featured in countless movies, and TV shows, and even inspired the design of Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle, cementing its status as an iconic landmark.
  • Outdoor activities: The surrounding mountains are perfect for outdoor adventures like cycling and horseback riding. You can explore trails, visit the nearby Linderhof Palace and Hohenschwangau Castle, or simply stroll through the scenic countryside.

Things to know before booking Neuschwanstein Castle tickets

Located at the foothills of the Alps in the Swabia region of Southern Germany, Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Southern Bavaria.

  • Before diving into ticket options and how to choose the right ticket, it’s important to first understand the castle network. A visit to Neuschwanstein Castle opens up the possibility of seeing two other castles nearby: the Hohenschwangau and Linderhof Castles.
  • Neuschwanstein Castle is situated near the town of Hohenschwangau, just a few hundred meters away from Hohenschwangau Castle, the former home of Bavarian royalty. In fact, the Neuschwanstein ticket office is located at Hohenschwangau Castle, making it easy to visit both castles in one day. For a seamless experience, consider booking a Neuschwanstein guided tour that includes access to both.
  • Linderhof Palace, on the other hand, is about an hour’s drive from Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles. With proper planning or a combo tour, you can easily visit all three castles in a single-day trip.

Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles

  • An important detail about Neuschwanstein Castle is that entry to the palace and its rooms are only available through guided tours. If you wish to explore the castle's interiors, including its many rooms and artwork, ensure your Neuschwanstein guided tours includes access to the interior. Standard tickets only allow access to the castle grounds, where you can admire the exterior of the castle.
  • Neuschwanstein Castle is perfect for a day trip, with the journey from Munich to Hohenschwangau taking only about two hours. To avoid the hassle of arranging transportation, we recommend booking Neuschwanstein guided tours with transfers from Munich.
  • Most tours to Neuschwanstein Castle also include a visit to Mary’s Bridge, a nearby bridge known for its iconic view of the castle. Access to the bridge is free, but availability depends on weather conditions.
  • For a different experience, you can also book Neuschwanstein Castle summer tours, which allow you to explore the castle grounds and enjoy a bike tour around Hohenschwangau.
  • You may also want to consider horse-drawn carriage tours, which take you from Hohenschwangau Castle to Neuschwanstein Castle in traditional, old-fashioned carriages.

Linderhof Palace

  • We also recommend visiting Linderhof Palace, just 45 kilometers from Neuschwanstein. Our premium Neuschwanstein and Linderhof tours offer luxurious, air-conditioned cars, free Wi-Fi, and complimentary refreshments. If you plan to travel on your own, note that there is no direct public transportation between the two castles, so driving is the most convenient way to visit both in one day.
  • You can choose between bus or train transfers when booking Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day trip tickets. Between January and March, the weather can be unpredictable, making bus travel difficult. We recommend opting for train transfers if you're planning to visit during the winter months.
